Windows Activation Error 0xC004C008

Error code 0xC004C008 is one of the most commonly reported issues during the activation of Windows 7, 8.1, 10, and 11. It means that the product key you entered has already been used on another computer or that the limit on the number of allowed activations has been exceeded. Such a key becomes invalid in accordance with Microsoft’s licensing policy.

The most effective and reliable way to resolve this issue is to contact the seller from whom you purchased the key and request a replacement or— activate via telephone

? Alternative: Activation by phone

If the system rejects the online activation but you are certain that the key is correct (e.g., after reinstalling on the same device), you can use the phone activation option. (We do not recommend this due to the lengthy activation process)

How to activate Windows over the phone:

  1. Press the key combination Win + R, type " slui 4 ", then press Enter.

  2. Select your country or region from the list.

  3. The screen will display the phone number for Microsoft's activation department and a special installation code.

  4. Call the number provided and follow the instructions given by the automated voice system or a customer service representative. If you have a question about how many devices the product has been used on, enter: 0

  5. You will receive a confirmation code, which you must enter in the appropriate fields.

Phone activation is completely legal and often effective when online activation fails, especially when the key has been tied to specific hardware and the system interprets a re-activation attempt as a license transfer.

When you buy from us, you don't have to worry about phone activation—just contact us within 30 minutes and you'll receive a new key.

What does error code 0xC004C008 mean? – Technical explanation

Error code 0xC004C008 appears when:

  • The key has been used more times than allowed by the license (for example, MAK keys have a limited number of activations).

  • You are attempting to transfer an OEM copy of Windows to another computer —which is prohibited.

  • The key has been activated multiple times on different devices

  • The system determined that the hardware changes were too significant (e.g., replacing the motherboard) and is treating it as a new computer.

Can I transfer my Windows license to another computer?

It depends on the type of key:

  • OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) – assigned to the motherboard; cannot be transferred.

  • Retail (purchased separately in-store) – you can transfer it to another computer, but you must first uninstall it from the previous one.

  • MAK or Volume License – often limited to a specific number of activations, sold illegally on auction sites as “new.”

If the license is transferred without authorization, Microsoft will block activation, and error 0xC004C008 will appear.
